The Coffee Shop Chat on Minimum Wage

The city was busy outside when Sarah and Mike found a spot by the window in the small cafe. As they waited for their coffee, Mike scrolled on his phone. "You know," he said, "I heard on the news again that if they raise the minimum wage, a bunch of people will lose their jobs."

Sarah sipped her coffee and shook her head. "That's not always true. Actually, I read about a study last week. It looked at cities like Seattle and New York after they raised minimum wage. Turns out, the job numbers didn’t go down."

Mike frowned. "But how’s that possible? I always thought higher costs meant businesses let people go."

"That’s the myth," Sarah said, tapping her screen to pull up an article. "Here, this study by the National Bureau of Economic Research shows some places even saw job growth, especially in restaurants and retail. People had more money, so they spent more. Businesses needed extra hands."

Outside, a delivery truck honked, and a group of workers hurried past the window. Mike paused, watching them. "Maybe we should start tipping a bit more, too," he said, picking up the check.
