The Algorithm that Knew Our Breakup First

The train burst into the station, rattling everyone’s phones in their hands. Ava scrolled, waiting for Tom to finish his message. Out of nowhere, her dating app chimed with a notification: “Couples like you and Tom usually break up within two weeks. Prepare to talk openly.” She glanced up in confusion. Tom’s phone buzzed at the same moment.

“What’s your app saying?” Tom asked, face tight. People jostled around them, but it felt strangely quiet between the announcements. Ava hesitated, frowning at her screen. “It... thinks we’re about to break up,” she said, half-laughing, half-waiting for Tom’s reaction.

Tom studied his own phone, then laughed the same nervous laugh. “Well, that’s awkward.” He looked at her, but not in the way he used to. The train doors beeped. Neither of them moved.

“Do you want to get some coffee? Talk, I mean. About us?” Ava finally asked. The suggestion hung heavy between them, more real than the app, more final than she meant it to be.

The train departed, lights flickering across their faces. Tom closed his phone and asked, “Do you want to sit, or stand?” as their stop drifted out of view.
